Venue Overview
The University of Crete – Voutes Campus is a major academic and research hub located in Heraklion, Crete. The campus hosts several departments within the University’s School of Science and Engineering, including Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Biology, Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science, making it a highly relevant setting for an international conference focused on catalysis, chemical engineering, materials science, energy, and sustainable technologies.
As the host venue of CatScience Europe 2027, the Voutes Campus will provide an academic environment that encourages scientific exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and interaction among researchers, academics, industry professionals, and emerging scientists from around the world.

Location
The University of Crete’s Voutes Campus is situated in the Vasilika Vouton area of Heraklion, approximately 10 km from Heraklion city centre. The campus is located close to major scientific and research institutions, including the University Hospital of Heraklion and other research facilities.
The campus can be reached from central Heraklion by regular public bus services. The journey from Eleftherias Square in central Heraklion to Voutes Campus takes approximately 35–40 minutes, while a taxi journey takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Getting to Heraklion
Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and is accessible by air and sea, with regular connections to mainland Greece and other destinations.
By Plane
Heraklion International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” (HER) is the main airport serving Heraklion and is the most convenient airport for international conference participants.
There are regular flights between Heraklion and Athens, which serves as Greece's main international air hub. Regular domestic connections are also available to Thessaloniki and other Greek destinations. During the summer period, Heraklion Airport also receives direct flights from various European destinations.
The airport has bus and taxi services for onward travel into Heraklion. The airport is approximately 10 minutes from the city centre by road, depending on traffic.
By Ferry
Heraklion is also accessible by sea. Daily ferry services connect Heraklion with Piraeus, the main port of Athens.
Ferry connections provide an alternative travel option for participants travelling from mainland Greece or combining their conference visit with a wider trip through Greece.

By Car
The Voutes Campus is located southwest of central Heraklion and can be reached by road via the Heraklion–Moires National Road. The campus is signposted from the main road.
By Bus
Regular public bus services connect Heraklion city centre with the University of Crete – Voutes Campus.
The main city-centre connection is from the area around Eleftherias Square, with services operating regularly throughout the day. The journey to the Voutes Campus takes approximately 35–40 minutes.
By Taxi
Taxis provide a convenient option for participants travelling directly from hotels, the city centre, or Heraklion Airport.
From central Heraklion, the journey to the Voutes Campus takes approximately 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Safety
Participants are advised to follow normal travel precautions, keep personal belongings secure, and follow local regulations during their stay.
For international participants, we recommend checking passport, visa, travel insurance, and entry requirements well in advance of the conference.
Currency
The official currency of Greece is the Euro (€).
Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops, and most tourist establishments. It is nevertheless useful to carry some cash for smaller purchases and local transportation.

The official language is Greek. English is widely used in hotels, restaurants, tourist areas, universities, and other international settings.
Weather
Heraklion has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, generally dry summers and mild winters. Participants attending CatScience Europe 2027 are advised to check the local weather forecast before travelling and pack comfortable clothing suitable for both conference activities and outdoor exploration.

Heraklion offers public bus services and taxis for transportation around the city. The University of Crete's Voutes Campus is connected to central Heraklion by regular bus services.
